Safety Match
May 2021
Tackling a diverse range of road safety concerns is one of the many challenges US Local and Tribal road agencies face.
The Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) is asking for equally diverse experts in solving challenges “such as roadway departure, intersection safety, speed management, pedestrian and bicyclist safety” to provide technical assistance through a new Safety MATCH program.
Safety MATCH (Mentoring, Assistance, Training, and Communication Help) is seeking active or retired public transportation professionals with safety expertise to volunteer as Mentors, sharing strategies, experience, and best practices to deliver safer roads, saving lives.
Safety MATCH will provide free technical assistance to Local and Tribal agencies requesting it. Importantly, Safety MATCH recognizes that just as there is no one-size-fits-all situation, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
WDM USA encourages safety professionals to apply as Mentors – the broader the range of experiences, the likelier agencies in need of technical assistance are to find someone who has faced and successfully mitigated similar challenges.
Ryland Potter, WDM USA’s Director of Business Development, says, “Peer exchanges and Mentor/Mentee relationships are one of the best ways to communicate lessons learned, evaluate and address localized challenges, and to learn reciprocally about best practices.”
“Mentors sharing effective roadway safety technologies and countermeasures can have a transformative impact on communities, saving lives and reducing serious injuries. We’re happy to share this opportunity with the pavement friction management community and encourage people to apply for both sides of the Safety MATCH equation.”
