  • SCRIM® Surveys

For more than half a century W.D.M. USA Limited have been carrying out continuous pavement friction measurement in other countries around the world to help reduce crashes and save lives – now they are ready to revolutionize the safety performance management of US roads.

WDM USA’s fleet of SCRIM® road survey machines is now delivering continuous friction measurement surveys across the US network, including around horizontal curves.

Studies in both the United Kingdom and in New Zealand show that introducing a wet road skidding policy, and working with the WDM SCRIM® machine, helps reduce crashes by between 30 and 40%, over and above the results of other safety improvement programs

Measuring, monitoring, and maintaining pavement friction – especially at locations where vehicles are frequently turning, slowing, and stopping – can prevent many road departures and intersection-related crashes, resulting in fewer serious injuries and fatalities.

The FHWA, who are promoting ongoing pilot studies that compare continuous pavement friction testing technologies to State DoT’s LWST equipment, say Continuous Pavement Friction Measurement best practices and proven technology present an exciting opportunity for the U.S. road safety community.

Uniting Safety and Pavements: Global Insights into Friction-Informed Asset Management

Join Andy Mergenmeier, WDM USA’s Director of Pavement & Safety Engineering, and a panel of global experts for an interactive panel discussion at the 15th National Conference on Transportation Asset Management, Aug 25th – 28th in Chicago. The session will highlight how organizations can reduce crashes before they occur by integrating pavement friction data into asset management strategies. Panellists will showcase real-world success stories, discuss how pavement friction management strategies were tailored to their organizations’ needs, and how predictive analytics help optimize safety investments and friction-informed asset management. The Program Safety performance measures collected by SCRIM®,...

    Trends at TRB 2025

This week we’ve been reflecting on TRB 2025 and how the learning and inspiration we took away can support our work to deliver a safer road network across North America. Data sources – their reliability, security, standardization, and interoperability – took center stage in many sessions. So did questions of transparency on what datasets can (and can’t) answer. These details matter, especially when lives are on the line. Data is at the core of what WDM does. After six decades of data collection in more than 30 countries worldwide, WDM SCRIM® machines set the standard for...

Minnesota Collaborates with WDM USA on Materials Performance Projects

As part of WDM USA’s national Summer of SCRIM®, WDM USA partnered with Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and the Minnesota Local Road Research Board (LRRB) on two innovative material performance evaluation projects involving SCRIM® data. In the first, SCRIM® visited the MnRoad test track (sponsored by MnDOT and LRRB) in Otsego, MN to evaluate the friction performance of a variety of pavement marking materials and the friction differential between those markings and the surrounding pavement: https://www.cts.umn.edu/research/project/pavement-marking-colored-pavement-friction-differential-and-product-durability In the second, SCRIM® partnered with Vic...

Death Toll Rises On US Roads

For the second consecutive year estimates from the National Safety Council have shown how dangerous it is to drive on American Roads. Early data shows more than 46,000 people lost their lives in a preventable traffic crash in 2022. Estimates also reveal that compared to pre-pandemic 2019, the mileage death rate in 2022 increased nearly 22%! "From drivers and passengers to pedestrians and cyclists, road users of all ages are perishing in preventable crashes in the United States," said Lorraine Martin, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. "Words matter, and as a country, we need to learn and understand that there...
