Kentucky Leads the Way

FHWA engineers visited Kentucky last week to learn more about the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC’s) use of continuous pavement friction measurement to support a pavement friction management program.

Tori Brinkly, Senior Highway Safety Engineer with FHWA, saw WDM USA’s mini-SCRIM® road survey vehicle in action, continuously measuring road surface friction for both pavement and safety management purposes.

Mike Vaughn, Transportation Engineering Specialist at KYTC, said: “We are really excited to identify future safety improvement opportunities through the results we are obtaining via this proven safety countermeasure.”

WDM USA is in the third year of delivering network-wide pavement friction measurements for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. WDM USA uses both its mini-SCRIM® and larger sister machines to provide SCRIM® continuous pavement friction measurement over approximately 15,000 lane miles of KYTC-managed roads annually.
