Improve Road Safety
Address crashes with robust, precise and accurate skid resistance data.
WDM utilizes SCRIM® technology to provide comprehensive pavement safety surveying solutions for a safer, more efficient road network.

WDM has been at the forefront of highway condition surveys across the globe for more than 50 years.
The company manufactures, supplies, and operates bespoke condition survey machines that measure all of the key facets needed to manage and maintain network-level road and highway infrastructure.
Operating at traffic speeds and able to continuously monitor the friction/skidding resistance of the highway surface in one or both wheel tracks, SCRIM® vehicles collect GPS-linked continuous data on pavement friction, ride quality (IRI), macrotexture (MPD and SMTD), roadway geometry (curve radius, cross slope, grade), and forward-facing pavement images to enable comprehensive evaluation of functional pavement performance.
The ability to measure, understand, and predict the behavior of pavements and their functional surface characteristics are the foundation of proactive, effective pavement friction management and critical to ensuring road safety.

Understanding the tire-pavement relationship on road surfaces is key to the implementation of a safety-led approach to functional pavement performance management. SCRIM® CPFM offers robust, high-resolution data and precise insights into in-service pavements’ response to vehicle traffic and performance over time, given a range of environmental and contextual factors.
The skid resistance measurement technology underpinning SCRIM® vehicles has been used in project- and network-level test environments since the 1960s. Each SCRIM® vehicle is engineered for durability, accuracy, and repeatability to deliver a comprehensive understanding of key factors defining pavement performance and safety outcomes. Pavement friction management strategies that use SCRIM® CPFM equipment to perform regular surveying on an established set of routes yields benefits over both the short- and long-term.
Transportation agencies that establish a program of continuous pavement friction measurement and monitoring using SCRIM® can correlate safety outcomes with network characteristics, including pavement friction performance, to make proactive, targeted, and timely decisions on where, when, and how to enhance friction performance to reduce crashes and deliver safer roads.
WDM’s engineering excellence and the precision of SCRIM® CPFM technology, when combined with a rigorous equipment and data calibration, validation, and quality management program, is the foundation of WDM’s transformation of data to decision-making. From robust, reliable predictive safety analytics and the use predictive modeling in project prioritization, treatment and countermeasure selection, investment optimization, and performance management, it all starts with SCRIM®
WDM delivers more than data. We offer a suite of pavement safety performance data, performance management tools, and data management services backed by industry-leading quality management programs and expert engineering, analysis, and technical support.
WDM’s SCRIM® Surveying Services are trusted by transportation decision-makers to improve road safety and manage pavement safety performance proactively and cost-effectively across the pavement asset lifecycle.
